Even as I type these words I know that I will fail to fully describe my ideas.
And that is the point.
Starting with the premise that empathy is programmatic, Post-Cards from Post-America tempers mixed signals and the imprecision and impracticality of morphology to create a narrative of confusion. Mashing together the ontology of phonological and expressive needs, the work extrudes our current lack of coherence into a comic linguistic puzzle.
The barriers to expression are the first step – but after that what do we have to say? Are we speaking truth to power, or shouting into the wind? Do we even know what truth is – or are we satisfied with making it up as we go along?

Pillier de l'art vidéo et du média art, John Sanborn (né 1954) annonçait son retour dans le monde de l'art en 2015 avec une oeuvre épique, V+M, une variation sur le récit d'un amour interdit entre les dieux Vénus et Mars, dont les rôles étaient tenus par un casting se situant contre la dimension normative de cette histoire.
Au cours de ces quatre dernières années, les installations et monobandes de l'artiste ont opéré une fusion entre ses prouesses technologiques et un engagement socio-politique dissident.
A travers ses oeuvres, John Sanborn met en place un réseau comprennant l'autobiographie, la subjectivité et une histoire collective, explorant pour mieux défier ce que l'Amérique s'est laissée aller à devenir.
Les pièces présentées à la Galerie Tokonoma mettent de l'avant une écologie de portraits et d'autoportraits, soulignant les thèmes de deuil, de perte et de mort, ainsi que ceux de la famille et d'une communauté culturelle insurgée, réalisées au cours des années Bush et Obama. Un acte devenu plus pregnant depuis 2016.

Pioneering video and media artist John Sanborn (born NY 1954) announced a return to the art world in 2015 with the epic installation V+M, a retelling of the forbidden love story between gods Venus and Mars, as performed by a cast resisting a normative gender agenda of that narrative.
Over the last four years, the artist’s installations and single channel pieces have fused mastery of his technological apparatus with celebratory dissident social politics.
Through his artworks Sanborn articulates autobiography, subjectivity and collective history, exploring and challenging what America let itself become. This who with Galerie Tokonoma puts forward an ecology of portraits and self-portraits highlighting themes of loss and mortality as well as of family and defiant cultural kinship, made during the Bush and Obama years. An ongoing enterprise made more relevant since 2016.
